Re: Bow Bags

Hi,

To complete this very enlightening email from Dave,
here are a couple of references from Burgundy.

They show that in Burgundy that bows were bought in huge numbers
by the prince and transported in chests.

In 1475, (Pr=E9paratifs de campagne, 1475, Archives d=E9partementales du =
=20
Nord,
Lille, B.3519, retranscription recettes de l=92artillerie), Charles the =20=

Bold
has 8000 bows in his artillery train, enough for all archers of the =20
companies
of ordinances.

That doesn't mean the archers didn't carry their own bow but
at least the Duke was ready to replace them.

In 1472 ( Artillerie de l=92exp=E9dition de Zierics=E9e, 1472,
Archives d=E9partementales du Nord, B.3518, retranscription recettes
de l=92artillerie), 1000 hand bows were brought from Lille to Antwerp
in preparation for an expedition to Ziericsee.

In 1468 (Advis fait par maistre Woulters, Archives d=E9partementales
du Nord, Lille ; B.3519 ; retranscription recettes de l=92artillerie)
an inventory mentions 5 chests for bows.

In 1473, an inventory ( Etat des parties d=92artillerie que le Duc
a ordonn=E9 =EAtre pr=EAtes avant le 1er avril 1473, Archives
d=E9partementales du Nord, Lille, B.3519, transcription recette
de l=92artillerie) states that the Duke ordered 3030 bows made
from 4300 pieces of yew bought previously by the duke.
The same document mentions the reparation of 600 old
bows and also some 50 old chests for bows, the acquisition
of 100 new chests for bows and of 2290 pieces of wood to make bows.

You can find all that here :

Cheers,

Mathieu
