There is also a quote or two in "Le Costume en Bourgogne" from original 
sources in the  early 1400's.
Here's one from 1427:
"Pour carreler 3 paires de gros souliers pour iceulz faire ferrer 
chacune paire de 4 fers à façon fers à chevaulx, et en iceulx mis 4 gros 
cloux à grosses pointes, pour aler sur la glace"
