One possible explanation for the perceived difference in pictorial and
archaeological evidence concerning this type of footwear is the use of shoes
with soles with wooden pegs. Some of the pictures of "hobnailed" shoes may
actually show pegs. At Helgeandsholmen in Stockholm, 47 pegged composite
soles have been found. In addition there were 525 fragments of this type of
sole. The finds are dated to the 14th and 15th c. This type of shoe
accounted for as much as 6.8% of the total number of individual shoes found
at the excavations. A single complete find (including the upper) is
illustrated in the following picture:
