We have been in this topic before. Do the following search
on google:
	shoenails site:www.companie-of-st-george.ch


Basically there are a few pictoral sources, two or three
written sources that suggest their existence (but i am sure
there has to be more, once you start searching).

BUT: There is no archaeological evidence. Now compare this
to the Roman excavations and maybe you come up with a good
theory. I do not have one.


As for the Medieval Soldier: Many reenacters i know (inside and
outside of the Company) wear nailed shoes. They say it makes
you walk (and fence!) in a saver way on wet grounds. So there is 
a safety issue involved.
