Hi Eva,

I back your and Mick's comment regarding the fantasy resp. 
extraordinary costumes of Romans soldiers. The "Ecce Home scenes"
(-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecce_Homo) are typical
examples.

The puffed sleeves you describe. Do they show the same pattern
intersections (versus a single large "puff" :) as on the original
link?
