I'm not a specialist, but ever since medieval artists have started to portray Crucifiction, Roman guards have often been given "extraordinary" (usually not existing) weapons or clothes, so that they could be clearly distinguished from all the "good" guys.

This could be another example of that. The jack is lovely but having another one on painting not connected with Crucifiction or on a sculpture wolud do better as a soure for reenacting.

But of course I might be wrong.
