Hi Jörg
Again, you summed it up pretty well.
More details, though : "le Jeu" deals specifically with poleaxe fighting in armour inthe barriers. As Jörg said, it is for now the oldest available French manuscript around. Its Burgundian origins are to be confirmed, though we all know this weapon was highly popular in this time and area.
I had the chance to study the original ms at the BNF. Contrarily to what is commonly thought, "le Jeu" is a well organized, thoroughly 'integrated' system (though I don't like the word). The book's organization clearly shows a definite inner structure for the teachings. At first glance, they could appear as a basic succession of "if he does this do that" techniques, but things are not that simple. There are 2 big things I regret about this ms : it is an anonymous treatise (though I am still trying to identify the author), and it is a work in progress (there are spaces left throughout the entire ms for illustrations - unfortunately we will never see them). All this also clearly shows that it was not a mere collection of random techniques, but a precious, high quality, structured book (both as an object and as a teaching document) made for/by an important individual.
There is an English translation by Prof. Sidney Anglo available from several websites, although he made several mistakes. I promised a revised translation for the HEMAC website a few years ago now, but you know how things are..(mea culpa, mea maxima culpa).
I also gave a look (okay, maybe more than just a look) at other poelaxe-related sources of Burgundian origin, especially the writings of Olivier de la Marche - my conclusion is that the man knew his poleaxe rather well. And comparison with other poleaxe treatises (even partial) also gave interesting results...all this now needs to be given a proper form before publication (some day..)
Cheers
Fab
PS : Jörg, did you get the CDs ?
Hi Fab!
Welcome to the list! Hope you enjoy yourself here.
Christian, FYI 'Le Jeu de la Hache' is a Burgundian treatise about pole-axe combat, AFAIK the only French Medieval manuscript of this kind.
I've worked a bit with an English translation of 'Le Jeu' I found somewhere on the net many moons ago and it's a solid and sound 'system', though I admit that my pole-axe is a bit 'Talhoferized'. ;)
Now back to lurk mode...
Cheers, Jörg
