Re: Cotton padding

Hello.

Christian, I´ve got no further information available as to the existence of
seeds in the cotton batting. So sorry.

About the Lübeck/Stendal padded garments I´ve got only two articles, an 1939
issue of the Zeitschrift für Historische Waffenkunde, and a small article in
"Albrecht Dürer- Waffen und Rüstungen", which mostly relies on the
information given in the aforementioned article.

Mathieu,

as far as I know the Chartres garment most likely is a coat armour which
used to be worn on top of a maile shirt, but underneath a breastplate if
there was any, just like the monument of Walter von Hohenklingen. There´s a
nice picture of it on the following page:
http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/ufarm/hd_ufarm.htm
and a gaudy rendition from a model manufacturer:

Actually, most extant examples of padded garments which I have read about so
far, i.e. the Chartres pourpoint, another one which, I think, is in the
Musee de Tissus in Lyon, and the Stendal and Lübeck specimens in fact are
padded with raw cotton.
