Re: Cotton padding

Hi there,

" L'en ne doit pas faire neuf gippon de vielz estuoves ne d'autres choses for de pur coton bourroyé de soye ou mieux. "
In Recueil des ordonnances relatives aux métiers de Paris, fol. 89.

This status excerpt dates back from 1380, but the whole statuses were renewed during the 15th c. It imposes the use of raw cotton or better, silk, as a padding for 'gippons pourpointés' (e.g. +/- civilian pourpoints). It's just an example (not the more explicit, but the one close at hand...) among the many, many French statuses imposing the use of raw cotton or raw silk for paddings of pourpoints, armour linings, etc (example: Troyes tailors' statuses - 1400, ...).

Cheers,

Loïc Leymerégie
