Food Storage

Recently on a US discussion board the question of food storage came up,
more specifically foods that are suppose to be refrigerated. 
Suggestions came up from hidden ice chests to bringing live chickens to
the event and killing them were brought up.  I'm wondering what various
European 15th century groups do.
