hi Haakan & all
my knowledge is not as large as i would like to, but i will try to find
somethink...
in general possesing of slaves was more possible in countries connected to
non-christian countries (possesing a christian-slaves was abolished by
church)...
slaves were quite common in Portugal, and in the middle of Xv century it was
quite popular - the phenomenon of slavery - its frequency - rose up in later
times (in Portugal - even in the end of XV century, and later - in Spain) -
connecting to discovery of Americas, and so on...
on the other hand - there are some documents of XVII century Kingdom of
Poland of possesing so-called "Turks" - non-christian slaves...
in Muslim countries it was normal to use POWs as cheap workers (so-called
"jasyr" excursions of Tatars - which were capturing slaves - to sell them to
Turkey - written documents about - even in 1241 (battle of Legnitz)... and
is still proven by XVII sources... the "yeni-ceri" formatioins of elite
trukish infantry were recruited of christian slaves, and so on...
why am I writing about this: The Turkish empire of that time possesed large
part of Europe - if we like it or not ;) - that is why i think it was worth
mentionnig...
bu the way: spanish galleys of the Mediterrenian Sea were also "moved" by
slaves (also by crimminals, but not only)...
so - that is all I wanted to add... topic is rather large, but not good
explored mainly because slavery was higher in Eastern countries...
regards
T.
