Gambeson (surviving examples)

From: "Lutz Schmidt"

Hi,

-at-Gerry:

"No "gambesons" survive. [...]"
Are you sure about this? There are at least 3 surviving Padded Jacks in Germany, one at Stralsund, and 2 others in Lübeck.... all three are datet arround 1470-1500!
....and the one of the Black prince in Canterbury ....?

If you want to know more about the Lübeck-Padded Jacks, contact Tobias Frin ( frin-at-volkelin.de ), he has examined them closely....

For the construction: They seem to be made of linnen, "stuffed" with cotton.
Stuffed in this case means: they put raw cotton between several layers of linnen, and stichted all together....
After beeing completed, they have been painted Black, leaving the seams and some parts of the Jack white! And the front part has been cut off where the Plate armour was over it....

cheers Lutz
