Personally I find that the best plan of action when
rain threatens is to retire to a suitable hotel for the
night.

Thanks David!
The problem is if the tent of Yours was made of
linen (i hope I used correct word :( ) Cotton is MUCH more
thicker - and I know that army tents were very often made of it -
that`s the problem...
but thanks very much...

As a kid in the (my god) 50's and 60's, we camped out for weeks in
unwaterproofed canvas bell tents dated from before the first world
war. When it rained (it does that in England) we passed the time shouting
at the uninitated 'Don't touch the **ing sides'. What fun we had, we
nailed each other to the ground with tent pegs sometimes.
If you touched the side, it dripped, where you had touched it.
I read about Charles the Bold having waxed canvas for
tents, but can't recall the **ing reference. This would be very
heavy, I should think. It is easier not to touch the ** ing sides.
all right!!!
So - I will wait for some more answers -
Thanks veru much John!!!

I'm sure
SOMETHING was used, but what I don't know... but be patient, all the
luckier members of St. George are at an event this weekend, so expect
the replies to start flying next week.

Well - thanks very much John... Your
answer gave me possibility to look at this case from another point
of view ( - i do not need to make my future tent waterproof anyway
:D ) - But - to be honest - I do not think, that in times when it
was much colder people could afford themselves to seat in wet
tents... hummm... rather not... :( ...
thanks very much anyway...

No, they
are not. In THEORY (and this works well enough, but not perfectly)
the threads of the canvas itself swell with the wet and make the
weave tighter and the rain runs off the outside. However, if you
so much as touch the inside, that's it, it rains indoors
too....

I`ve got a question connected with tents - i`ll be much obliged for any help
received from You...
1. How do You impregnate `em?? (? don`t know if i used correct word
:( ) - So maybe this way: How do You make them "waterproof"???? Is there a
receipe for that?
Any wise advices connected with tents? what to do, and what not?
I`ll be very thankfull...
