Announcement: ML: cosg-living-history

From: Christian Folini
Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 15:15:53 +0200

Dear Members of the Companie of St. George, Supporters, Friends
and Other People,

This is an announcement for a new living-history mailing-list.

Let me first explain what a mailing list is: A ML is a list of
people subscribed to a computer-server that delivers the E-messages
to all the subscribed people on the list. You send one message to
the server and everybody recieves it. This comes very handy, as
there will be only one address you need to know when you want
to reach the whole group. No need for you to keep track of
address changes, new members etc.

We started with a discussion list for the Companie in June
already, but while it was a good start, as the traffic suggests,
we ran into trouble when arguments about membership in the
Companie, the list, topics etc. arose.
(I sent this announcement to the former list as well, so you might
get it twice. Sorry for cross-posting)

We talked things over in our recent summer camp in Canova (.ch)
It seems the best solution is to split things up. This results
in two seperate lists. One for members and their internal
discussions, one lists for everyone seriously interested
in 15th century living-history. This is the announcement
to the latter list, where you are invited to subscribe.

The focus of the list is on renactment of the 2nd half of
the 15th century. It is intended for exchange of knowledge,
addresses, tips, discussions about history of the era etc.
In my eyes there are no silly topics within this area. Just
about anything that has to do with it would be suitable.

There have been a lot of discussions about spreading knowledge,
getting new people to talk etc. It is our aim to provide
a forum for exchange and contact. Close to the Companie of
St. George, but not limited to its members. Too many good
reenactors are outside of our range and we would not want to
miss their contributions. On the other hand, we are sure there
are a lot of experts in the Companie that are more than willing to
share their knowledge with people from other living-history
groups. This mailing lists tries to be the place where all these
people can meet.

The members of the other list we started in June (cosg-list)
have been subscribed to his list as well by myself. So no
need to act for them. The other ones have 2 methods for subscription.
The simple way is to reply to this message. The one a bit more intriguing is
to go to www.egroups.com, make yourself known and subscribe
to the list cosg-livin-history. You application for subscription will then
be forwarded to me. To unsubscribe jus turn to www.egroups.com
or ask me to unsubscribe you.

When we gave it a first try with a mailing list, it prooved
there are many people (especially within the Companie) who are
new to the net and unsuited to what we call <<netiquette>>.
While it did not mean a big offense it comes handy to refer
to the concept of online behavior. A start might be the pages
found at http://www.albion.com/netiquette/

Once you are subscribed you can reach the others with an
emessage to

--- cosg-living-history-at-egroups.com ---

The list started in June has 19 members today. As I transferred them
all, I expect the new list to take off at once. So be sure
to subscribe quickly or you will be missing the first threads...

with the very best regards
