Excalibur from Lake Zug
A late medieval artefact discovered by the Archaeological Department of Canton Zug
This season the Museum Burg Zug will delve into the Middle Ages. This was prompted by the discovery of a sword at the bottom of the lake by members of the Archaeological Department of Canton Zug during an underwater dive in Oberwil. After its restoration in the Swiss National Museum the weapon will be on display at the Burg Zug.

The Burg will use the tongue-in-cheek title “Excalibur from Lake Zug”. Much like the magical sword Excalibur, the Zug sword is shrouded in mystery. Even its dating proved quite difficult and has resulted in several different findings. There are also various theories regarding the ownership of the sword. And how it came to be lying at the bottom of the lake will probably always remain a mystery. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to hazard a guess!
On their tour of the Burg Zug visitors will learn much about medieval beliefs, living conditions, construction and war service. They will encounter the age-old tradition of knightly heroes and virtues that have retained their fascination to this day. Other attractions will be films about the Middle Ages and a medieval festival will be held in and around the Burg in June. A minnesinger will enchant the audience at the ‘Kunstnacht’, and in September a Swiss mercenary will perform his ballads.
The exposition opens on 3rd March and lasts until 30th September 2012.
