Robert Nicholson: from Guest to Veteran

My name is Robert Nicholson. I first attended a company event in 2015 at Vallerois-le-Bois in France as an artisan demonstrating bowl turning on a pole lathe. I had been invited by a good friend who believed I was company material and thought I would enjoy the experience.

I loved it. It changed the way I looked at re-enactment having only done events in the UK for the past 10 years. I met so many people from all over Europe with similar enthusiasm and interest in the details. It was safe to say I was hooked from this one event.

I was lucky enough that the company were very happy with my performance that they invited me to Haut-Kœnigsbourg in 2016. A much colder event as I remember sleeping on the battlements under 4 wool blankets fully dressed and still cold. What brought it back for me though was how everyone, recruit or veteran, soldier or artisan pulled together. Everyone kept warm through the kitchens hard work and had a great time (though I may have lost some coin in gambling). Once again another great event.

It was in 2017 at lenzburg where I approached the company to become a recruit. And after the company voted on it I was accepted. Being a recruit did mean that I needed to perform if I wanted to become veteran. This was some I believed would not come for a long time as my kit standards would need to improve or I would be test continuously.

To my surprise it was in 2018 at the Nykøbing medieval centre during the end of day muster I was asked to step forward and take the oath on the company flag and relics of Saint George. I was very nervous standing in front of the company making the oath and trying focus on each sentence. And then came the “huzzah” and everyone congratulating.

I am now veteran of the Company of Saint George. Many of the people I first met I now consider to be good friends. I have traveled to three different counties with the company. And now the hard work begins...
